My time spent volunteering at the zoo was definitely one of the highlights of my highschool experience. When I first started out there, I was part of a summer program (Junior Zoo Crew) and it was basically a service learning camp. I discovered my passion for the environment there and really enjoyed learning basic ecology while cleaning up the zoo exhibits and educating zoo guests about the animals and conservation. Then, I was invited back to volunteer more, but more individually. What I started doing, and still do now, is work as an educator on zoo grounds, educating anyone at the zoo who will listen about various animals and conservation issues. I feel by educating people about why animals and plants matter, I am serving both my local and worldwide community by educating those in my own community about issues that are often in other countries whose effects have global ramifications. If you would like to become involved at the zoo, please reach out to me via email. The zoo is looking for teen volunteers, so if this article interested you, please click here to learn more about current volunteer opportunities.
