In prior years, on the third Monday of January, the Bryn Mawr Upper School community gathers in Centennial Hall for an assembly devoted to Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights efforts. However, this year, the BMS community decided to commemorate Dr. King’s efforts in a different way. On January 14, 2016, the Bryn Mawr community celebrated a day of service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. After a two moving speeches delivered by Ms. Titus and CSL President Serena Patel, respectively, students and faculty members were dismissed to their advisory groups.

Each advisory worked together to create breakfast and lunch bags that would later be donated to Beans and Bread: a nonprofit organization affiliated with St. Vincent de Paul Church that provides services for hungry and homeless residents of Baltimore. Advisory groups started the meal process by adding all non-perishable food items, including juice boxes, oreos, and chips to the bags. Then, advisory groups answered discussion questions provided by CAFE pertaining to race and society.

All members of the Bryn Mawr community were invited to make sandwiches, which would later be added to the bagged meals, on MLK Day, January 18. After the bags were completed, they were collected by a representative of Beans and Bread. The upper school created a grand total of 342 bagged meals. A huge thanks to CAFE, CSL, and BSU for making this wonderful activity possible!
